What makes a top a layering top
Three things separate a layering top from a regular long sleeve shirt, and only one of them is the sleeve.
The fabric has to be thin and stretchy
A layering top goes underneath something, so bulk is the enemy. Anything heavy, stiff, or thickly ribbed will read through the outer layer and pull it out of shape at the shoulder and the underarm. Soft knits with stretch are what work. The Kyliee is a rayon jersey; the Essential Long Sleeve Tee is a smooth cotton knit. Both give when you move and both lie flat under a second layer.
The sleeve has to be long enough, and cut generously enough
A sleeve that is snug at the bicep will bind the second you pull a sleeve over it, and a sleeve that stops short of the wrist rides up and disappears into the outer sleeve by mid-morning. The Kyliee sleeves are cut with room on purpose so they sit right under something else. If you want coverage without a full long sleeve, a 3/4 sleeve tee or a half sleeve tee does the same job with less fabric.
The neckline and the hem have to be finished
A layering top is only useful if it can also be the whole outfit. That means a neckline that sits where you want it without adjusting, and a hem that is clean rather than raw. A quick way to test one you already own
Put it on, put a sweater over it, and raise both arms. If the outer sleeve drags the inner sleeve up past your elbow, that top is not a layering top. It is a shirt.

Bow Check runs a soft blue windowpane check across a cream ground, with tiny black bows tucked into every square. Like Steadfast, it reads as a neutral from across the room.
Houndstooth is the traditional pattern in rich chocolate and cream, small in scale so it reads soft and wearable rather than bold. Safari puts classic leopard spots in soft black and tan on a warm sandy ground, which pairs as happily with denim as with a black skirt.
On the plain side, Chocolate Brown joins as a warm grounded neutral, and Black, Navy, and White are back in stock. Those three are the ones worth keeping doubles of.
Four ways to wear a layering top
Under a short sleeve or sleeveless dress
This is the job a layering top was made for. A sleeveless dress you bought in June becomes a September dress the moment there is a long sleeve knit underneath it. Match the top to the darkest color in the dress and the two read as one outfit rather than two.
Under a sweater or cardigan
A sweater knit against bare arms is the reason a lot of sweaters stay folded. A thin long sleeve underneath solves that, and it also keeps the sweater cleaner, so it needs washing less often. Our Iris sweater sets and the rest of the Comfy and Cozy pieces all wear better with one.
Over a layering dress, or under one
The Original Midi Layering Dress just restocked in Black, Navy, Chocolate Brown, and Brick Red, and the maxi length came back in Black, Army Green, and Camel. Put a long sleeve tee under either one and you have a full outfit in two pieces with nothing to tuck, iron, or adjust.
On its own, with a skirt
A printed layering top is a whole outfit with a plain skirt. Pull Rosebud or Bow Check on with a classic skirt in black or navy and the top does all the work. This is the case for buying one of the prints rather than a fourth black one.
What to buy first if you are starting from nothing
Buy black, then white or cream, then navy, and only then a print. Those three solids will go under roughly everything already hanging in your closet, and they are the ones you will reach for on the mornings you have no plan. Two of each is not excessive if you wear skirts and dresses daily; one in the wash means one still in the drawer.
After that, a print earns its place by giving you an outfit rather than a foundation. One is usually enough to change how three or four skirts feel.
On sleeve length
If your closet is mostly short sleeve, buy long sleeve. If you already own long sleeve and keep pushing them up, a 3/4 ribbed tee may suit you better. There is no prize for owning every length.
Sizing, fit, and care
Both tops run S through 3XL, and the price is the same in every size. There is no upcharge for a 2XL or a 3XL here, which we mention because it is not the norm.
Both are true to size. If you are between sizes and plan to wear the top mostly underneath, take the smaller one so it stays flat; if you plan to wear it on its own, take the larger. Wash soft knits cold and dry them low or flat. Heat is what shortens a sleeve and warps a neckline, and a layering top with a short sleeve or a stretched neck has lost the only two things that made it useful.

What is the difference between a layering tee and a regular long sleeve shirt?
A layering tee is thinner, stretchier, and cut with less ease through the body and sleeve so it can sit under something without adding bulk. A regular long sleeve shirt is built to be the outer layer, so it is usually heavier and roomier and will bunch underneath.
Can I wear a layering top on its own?
Yes. Both of these have finished hems, plain necklines, and no logos, so they work as a stand-alone top with a skirt. The printed ones in particular are made to be seen.
What do I wear under a sleeveless or short sleeve dress?
A long sleeve or 3/4 layering tee under the dress, and a slip if the dress is light in color or thin. Match the tee to the darkest color in the dress and the layers stop looking like layers.
Do layering tops work for nursing or maternity?

Is a printed layering top too much under a patterned skirt?
Usually, yes, unless the two share a color and one of them is much smaller in scale. The easier path is a printed top with a solid skirt, or a solid top with a printed skirt. Either way one piece leads and the other stays quiet.
How many layering tops do I actually need?
For most women who wear skirts and dresses every day, four to six covers a week without laundry becoming a daily job. I would lean toward black, white, and navy, with one or two prints for the days when you want the top to be more of the statement piece of the outfit.
