The weather hasn't turned yet, but you can feel it coming. Mornings are cooler, evenings run long, and the summer pieces that carried you through July start to feel a little thin. Modest fall outfits don't require a whole new closet. They usually come down to two things: a top with real sleeve coverage, and a skirt you can pull on without thinking about it.

Here's how we build them at Nuggles, plus the new pieces we're leaning on this season.

What makes a modest fall outfit actually work

Fall dressing gets complicated when every layer needs adjusting. The outfits you'll reach for again are the ones that stay put.

Sleeve coverage you don't have to fuss with

A long sleeve top does most of the work in fall. It covers your arms without a cardigan you'll take off by noon, and it layers cleanly under a jumper or a sleeveless dress. If you're not ready for full sleeves in early September, a 3/4 sleeve top bridges the gap. We wrote more about that in our guide to modest 3/4 sleeve tops.

A skirt that stays where you put it

An elastic waistband and a midi length handle most of fall for most women. No zipper digging in when you sit down at a long dinner, no slit to think about, no adjusting after you bend to pick up a toddler. Our no slit skirts and stretch waist skirts are the two collections our customers come back to most once the weather cools.

Quick tip: build around two neutrals

Pick two colors that go with everything you already own. Black and navy is the safe pair. If you want something a little warmer, try pine green with a soft rose. Two neutrals plus one print gives you a week of outfits without much thinking.

New this season: the Bethany ribbed top and midi skirt

The Bethany Ribbed Top and the matching Bethany Ribbed Midi Skirt are new to the shop in Black, Navy, Pine Green, and Dusty Rose. They're made from the same soft, stretchy ribbed knit, so they can be worn as a set or split up and mixed with what's already hanging in your closet.

The top

The Bethany Top has a high rounded neckline finished with a layered ruffle trim, and matching ruffle cuffs on the long sleeves. It keeps a neat, fitted shape without feeling tight through the day. It's $34.99 and comes in S through 3XL. It runs true to size.

Worn on its own it's already a complete top. Layered under a jumper or a sleeveless dress, the ruffle cuffs peek out at the wrist and do the styling for you.

The skirt

The Bethany Skirt is a pull-on midi with an elastic stretch waistband, a gathered body, and pockets on both sides. No slit, no lining, and a ruffle along the hem. It's $49.99 in S through 3XL.

Together or apart

Worn as a set, the two pieces read as one soft column of color, which is a look that flatters most figures without any effort. Worn separately, the top goes with the skirts you already own, and the skirt pairs just as easily with a long sleeve layering tee or a simple tee from the tees and tanks collection.

Sunday morning

The Bethany set in Pine Green or Navy, worn head to toe, with flats. It's put together enough for church and comfortable enough to sit through a potluck afterward. If you want more ideas along these lines, our post on modest church outfits walks through a few more combinations, and the Sunday Best collection is where we keep the dressier pieces.

Errands and the school run

Bethany Top in Black over the skirt you wear most weeks. The pockets on the Bethany Skirt hold a phone and a set of keys, which matters more on a Tuesday than it sounds. Add a layering tee underneath on colder mornings and you've got another ten degrees of warmth without another outfit.

Cooler mornings that turn into active afternoons

Sport skirts have built-in leggings, which makes them one of the easiest things to wear when the temperature swings twenty degrees between drop-off and pick-up. New colorways just landed in the athletic skirts collection across the 27" and 31" lengths, plus a girls' version if you're outfitting more than one person.

Evenings at home

The Bethany Skirt in Black with whatever soft top you already reach for. It's a pull-on skirt with no waistband to unbutton, so it works for the stretch of the day when you're cooking dinner and folding laundry but might still answer the door.

Sizing and fit

Both Bethany pieces run true to size and come in S through 3XL. The ribbed knit has stretch, so if you're between sizes, the smaller one usually gives the neater line and the larger one gives a more relaxed drape. Either works. If you'd rather measure than guess, our how to measure page shows exactly where to put the tape.

If you shop the extended sizes, plus size tops and plus size skirts are filtered for you. Expecting or nursing? Start with maternity friendly tops, since a stretch waistband and a relaxed knit tend to carry through more than one season.

Common questions

Are the Bethany Top and Skirt sold as a set?

They're sold separately, so you can size each one for your own fit or buy just the piece you need. They're made from the same ribbed knit in the same four colors, so they match when worn together.

Does the Bethany Skirt need a slip?

It isn't lined. Whether you want a slip underneath depends on the color you choose and your own preference. A slip also adds a little warmth on cold days, which some women like in fall regardless.

What colors does the Bethany come in?

Black, Navy, Pine Green, and Dusty Rose, in both the top and the skirt.

Can I wear the Bethany Top under a jumper or sleeveless dress?

Yes, that's one of the things it does best. The high rounded neckline sits under most jumper necklines cleanly, and the ruffle cuffs finish the sleeve. Our layering essentials collection has the rest of the pieces that work the same way.

Do the sport skirts really have leggings built in?

They do. The leggings are attached inside the skirt, so nothing shifts or rides up when you're moving. That's what makes them work for exercise, chasing children, and cool mornings alike.

How long does it take to ship?

Orders placed before 8am Central ship the same day. U.S. shipping is free over $100, or over $60 if you're on our email list.

You don't need to overhaul anything for fall. Pick one long sleeve top in a color you already wear, add a skirt with a waistband you don't have to fight, and you've got most of the season covered. The new tops and skirts are in the shop now.
