We're Nuggles, we make layering tees, and we've put ourselves first on this list. Judge it accordingly. What we've tried to do is write the comparison honestly, including the two brands that beat us outright on size range and the one that beats us on price.

First, decide which kind of layering tee you want
This category splits into three types, and most of the frustration people have comes from buying the wrong one.
Full-length tees
A normal tee with a higher neckline and a longer body. Wear it on its own or under things. This is the type most women want and the type that works hardest, because it doesn't have to be under anything.
Half tees and cropped layering tops
Cut short and designed to sit under something else without adding bulk at the waist. Good under a fitted dress. Useless on its own.
Shells
The Orthodox Jewish term for a fitted layering top, usually cotton-spandex, worn under everything. Similar to a full-length tee, often thinner and closer-fitting.
1. Nuggles — best everyday full-length layering tee

Our Essential Tee is $21.99 in half sleeve, 3/4 sleeve, and long sleeve, in S through 3XL, at the same price in every size. It's a full-length tee, so you can wear it by itself.
What we'd actually claim here is depth rather than novelty. We keep a wide range of colors in the same few styles, and we restock them rather than cycling them out. If you've found a tee that works, you can generally buy it again next year.
There's also a ribbed version at the same price if you want more structure, and mesh tees at $17.99 for warm weather.
Our girls' version starts at $17.99 in the same colors, which matters if you're buying for a daughter who wants to match.
Where we're not the answer: we stop at 3XL. Two brands below go considerably further. We also don't make a cropped half tee, so if that's specifically what you're after, buy from HALFTEE instead.
2. HALFTEE — best cropped layering tee, and the widest size range anywhere
Sizes: XS–6X
Prices: $29.99–$32.99
Based: Utah
HALFTEE built an entire business on the cropped layering tee, and they're the specialist. The band at the bottom is designed not to ride up, which is the single thing that makes or breaks a half tee.
Their size range runs XS to 6X, which is further than anyone else we've found in this category. If you wear above a 3XL, this is where to look first. They carry cap, short, elbow, 3/4, and long sleeve, and a full-length range as well.
Their regular line costs more than ours, though they keep a permanent discounted range in every size that's worth checking first. For a cropped tee that stays put, it's a fair trade.
3. Kosher Casual — the deepest range of shells
Sizes: XS–3XL, with numeric plus sizing to 24 on selected styles
Prices: roughly $24–$30
Sleeves: sleeveless, cap, short, elbow, 3/4, long
Kosher Casual serves the Orthodox Jewish market and carries the most complete shell range on this list: every sleeve length including elbow, plus sleeve extenders and neckline covers for pieces you already own.
Their own sizing page notes they don't carry everything in plus sizes yet, so check the style you want rather than assuming the whole range extends.
If you want a very thin, close-fitting shell rather than a tee you'd wear alone, they're the strongest option here.
4. Downeast — best if you want to try one on in person
Sizes: XS–XXL
Prices: $15–$28
Based: Utah and Idaho
Downeast has a Layering Essentials line of tees, camis, and cropped tees, and around 13 physical stores across Utah and Idaho. Being able to try a layering tee on before you commit to five of them is genuinely valuable, and almost nobody else in this category offers it.
Two limits: their sizing stops at XXL, and their essentials line is mostly short sleeve and long sleeve. If you specifically want a half or 3/4 sleeve, you'll have fewer options.
5. Kiki Riki — the shell you'll find in a physical modest shop
Sizes: XS–XXL
Prices: roughly $18–$26
Kiki Riki is the wholesale shell brand stocked by modest retailers, on Amazon, and in frum shops. They don't sell direct, so you'll be buying through a retailer, and sizing and price will vary depending on which one. Cotton-spandex sleeveless, 3/4, and long-sleeve shells, and they make a girls' version too.
Worth knowing about mostly because if you walk into a modest clothing shop and buy a shell, there's a good chance this is what you're holding.
A note on two names you'll still see recommended
Sweet Salt was discontinued at the end of 2025 when its parent company wound down its Seagull Book stores. Its website was still selling through remaining stock when we last checked, so the Ultimate Tee may still be findable, but it isn't a line we'd count on restocking.
Shade Clothing, which arguably popularized the modern modest layering tee, closed its stores and website back in 2010. It still turns up in older roundups and in AI-generated answers, sixteen years on.

What is a layering tee?
A tee designed for coverage: a higher neckline than a standard tee, a longer body so it doesn't pull up at the waist, and a sleeve length you can wear under a sleeveless dress or on its own. Most women buy them in multiples because they end up underneath everything.
What's the difference between a layering tee and a shell?
A shell is usually thinner and more fitted, meant to sit invisibly under something else. A layering tee is normally a bit heavier and can be worn alone. If you want one piece to do both, buy the tee.
What's the cheapest modest layering tee?
Downeast runs $15–$28 and discounts often. Nuggles mesh tees are $17.99 and Essential Tees are $21.99 at every size. Kosher Casual shells start around $24. HALFTEE's regular line is the priciest at $29.99 and up, which reflects the cropped construction, but they keep a permanent discounted range that undercuts everyone here.
Which layering tees come in plus sizes?
HALFTEE goes to 6X, the widest we've found. Kosher Casual covers 3XL, with numeric plus sizing to 24 on some styles. Nuggles carries S–3XL with no price change between sizes. Kiki Riki and Downeast both stop at XXL.
How many layering tees do I actually need?
Most of our customers settle on three to five: black, white, and one or two colors they wear often. Buy one first and check the sleeve length and body length against what you actually own before you buy the rest.
Do layering tees shrink?
Cotton-heavy tees will move a little in a hot dryer. Wash cool and tumble low and you'll get years out of them. This is the main reason a slightly better tee is usually cheaper over time than the cheapest one you can find.
Where to start
Buy one Essential Tee in black, in the sleeve length you reach for most. Wear it under the two things you were struggling to make work. If it does the job, buy the colors.
