We're Nuggles, we make modest skirts, and we're on this list. Read accordingly. What follows is our honest attempt at the guide we'd want if we were the one shopping, including the brands that beat us on things we don't do well.

What actually matters in a plus size modest skirt
Most "plus size" skirt problems aren't about the number on the label. They're about five things:
- The waistband. A fixed waistband with a zipper is the single most common reason a skirt gets returned. An elastic or stretch waist sits differently through the day and doesn't dig in when you sit down.
- Whether the length was regraded. A lot of brands cut the same length across every size, which means a 31" skirt hits a size S below the knee and a size 3XL above it. Ask, or measure.
- The slit. Skirts that are modest in S often aren't in 3XL, because the fabric has less ease and the slit opens further.
- Fabric weight. Thin fabric clings and shows more in larger sizes. This is where cheap skirts fall down.
- Whether you pay more for the size. Some brands charge extra above XL. It's a defensible policy, and you should know about it before checkout.
1. Nuggles — best everyday plus size modest skirts
Sizes: S–3XL on essentially every skirt
Prices: about $21–$40
Based: Glenpool, Oklahoma
Here's our actual case. Every skirt we make comes in S through 3XL, and it's the same price in 3XL as it is in S. We don't run a separate plus-size collection with fewer options in it, because there isn't one to run. Whatever you see on the site comes in your size.
Our Classic Skirt is the one to start with. It's $27.99 to $31.99 depending on length, has a stretch waistband and no slit, and comes in 25", 27", 31", 34", and 36". Picking a length matters more at larger sizes, and most brands make you take the one length they cut.
If you want something softer and less structured, the Relaxed Midi Skirt is $32.99 and cut fuller through the hip.
Where we're not the answer: we stop at 3XL. If you wear a 4X or 5X, skip to Ivy City or Main Street Exchange below. We also don't make formal or occasion skirts, and we don't work in premium natural fibers.
2. Ivy City Co — goes the furthest up the size range
Sizes: XXS–5X
Based: Riverton, Utah
Ivy City reaches 5X, which is further than anyone else in this category that we're aware of, and their size chart maps 5X to roughly a US 32W/34W. Just as importantly, every size sits on the same product page. You aren't sent to a separate plus collection with a fraction of the choices.
They're priced as occasion wear rather than everyday, so this is a "buy one good piece" brand rather than a "fill the closet" brand.
3. The Main Street Exchange — the widest choice of sizing systems
Sizes: XS–4XL, numeric 0–24, and 1X–4X
Prices: skirts roughly $37–$62
Based: Gordonville, Pennsylvania
They carry letter sizing, numeric sizing to 24, and 1X–4X across the same skirt collection, which is unusual and useful if you know your number but not your letter. Most of their skirts are their own exclusive designs, and they run a large denim skirt range.
4. Devorah's Secret — the lowest prices in plus
Sizes: 1X–3X on their plus skirt range
Prices: roughly $20–$60
Based: North Miami Beach, Florida
A direct-to-customer maker serving the Orthodox Jewish market, with basic plus size modest skirts starting around $20 and a "Made in USA" claim on their site. Plainer than most of this list, with cotton and ponte basics rather than prints. If your priority is several plain, long, covered skirts for as little as possible, look here.
5. Lena Layne — a boutique that stocks plus properly
Sizes: XS–XL and 1X–3X
Prices: plus skirts roughly $28–$64
Based: Spanish Fork, Utah
A Utah boutique carrying outside labels plus their own exclusives, merchandising the same styles in both standard and 1X–3X. Worth a look for prints and textures if you've got the basics covered and want something with more going on.
6. Inherit and Dainty Jewells — both reach 4XL
Inherit carries XS–4XL and is the name to know for long denim skirts, at roughly $48–$78. Dainty Jewells also reaches 4XL, at roughly $30–$75, and leans dressier.
One thing to note on Dainty Jewells: they add $5 to X-Large and above. They explain it as the cost of extra fabric, which is a real cost that every brand in this category pays. We've chosen to absorb it. Neither approach is wrong.
Check the size chart before you shop these
Roolee comes up often in modest roundups, and their dresses do run XXS–3XL. But at the time of writing, their skirts collection tops out at XL. If you're specifically after plus size skirts, check the size filter before you spend an evening browsing.
Quince is worth knowing about for price, but it isn't a modest brand and its plus sizes are listed as separate products rather than extra options on the same page.
Common questions
What size do modest brands usually stop at?
Most stop at XL or XXL. The ones that go further are Ivy City (5X), Inherit, Dainty Jewells and Main Street Exchange (all 4XL), and Nuggles (3XL). Main Street Exchange also carries numeric sizes to 24.
Do plus size modest skirts cost more?
At some brands, yes. Dainty Jewells adds $5 for X-Large and up. At Nuggles the price is identical across every size. It's worth checking the product page before you assume, because the surcharge usually isn't mentioned until you pick your size.
What length skirt is most flattering in a plus size?
Most of our customers land on 31" or 34". A midi that ends mid-calf tends to read as intentional, where a length that stops right at the widest part of the calf can be less comfortable to wear. If you're tall, 34" or 36" keeps the same proportion that a 31" gives someone shorter. Our how to measure page shows where to measure from.
Are plus size modest skirts available without a slit?
Yes, though you have to look. Slits are the most common reason a skirt that looks modest online isn't when it arrives. Our whole no slit skirts collection is filtered for this, and Devorah's Secret and Main Street Exchange both carry no-slit options.
Which plus size modest skirts work for church?
A longer length in a solid color does most of the work. A 34" or 36" Classic Skirt with a layering tee is what a lot of our customers wear on Sundays, and our Sunday Best collection gathers the pieces that suit it. For a formal occasion or a wedding, Dainty Jewells is the better call.
Where to start
If you're rebuilding from scratch, buy one Classic Skirt in black in the length you think you want. If the length is right, buy two more in other colors. If it isn't, send it back and try the next length up. That's genuinely how most of our long-term customers started, and it costs less than guessing at a $70 skirt.
