I filmed this cozy cinnamon roll tutorial at home — and yes, I’m wearing one of my favorite Nuggles pieces while baking. You can find the exact top I’m wearing here → [Shop this look from Nuggles]

These homemade cinnamon rolls are one of our family’s favorite sweet treats. The dough is easy to make, soft, and fluffy, and works perfectly in either a bread machine or a stand mixer.

This recipe creates tender rolls with a simple cinnamon filling and a light, fluffy homemade frosting.

Cinnamon Roll Dough Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil

  • 1 egg

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

  • ¼ cup sugar

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 2½ teaspoons yeast

How to Make the Dough

Bread Maker Method

Add all ingredients to your bread maker and run the dough cycle.

Stand Mixer Method

Add all ingredients to a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook.
Mix for about 10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic and passes the windowpane test.

First Rise

Let the Dough Rise

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and allow it to rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Rolling and Shaping the Dough

Rolling out the dough to add the filling.

Roll the Dough

Roll the dough out on your counter.
Do not roll it too wide if you prefer fluffier cinnamon rolls. Keeping the dough slightly thicker helps the rolls stay soft and tall.

Cinnamon Roll Filling

Filling Ingredients

  • ¾ stick butter, softened (do not melt)

  • 1/2 - 3/4 cup brown sugar

  • Cinnamon, to taste

Add the Filling

Rolling Cinnamon Rolls

Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough.

Sprinkle the brown sugar over the butter, then sprinkle cinnamon evenly to taste.

Roll the dough up gently, being careful not to roll it too tightly.

Cutting and Second Rise

Slice and Rise

Cut the rolled dough into individual rolls.
This recipe usually makes 12 to 15 rolls.

Place the rolls into a greased 9×13 glass baking dish.

Allow the rolls to rise for about 30 minutes, depending on the temperature of your kitchen. The rolls should roughly double in size.

Allow the rolls to cool slightly before frosting.

Light and Fluffy Frosting

Frosting Ingredients

  • ¾ stick butter, softened

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 1½ pounds powdered sugar

  • Milk, as needed for consistency
