A modest printed top is a top with sleeve coverage built in and a print that carries the outfit, usually worn with a solid skirt. The Nuggles® Lexi Top is one: it has 3/4 sleeves and a relaxed fit, it is made from a soft rayon-spandex blend with stretch, and it is $26.99 in every size from S through 3XL.

Most of us have a closet full of solid skirts and a drawer of plain tees. The skirts work, but the outfits get a little samey. A printed top is the easiest way to change that without buying a whole new wardrobe, as long as it still covers what you want covered. Below is how to choose one, how to pair it with a skirt you already own, and a look at the four prints in our newest top.

What makes a printed top modest

Print has nothing to do with modesty. Coverage does. Three things decide whether a top works for you day to day.

Sleeves

A 3/4 sleeve ends between the elbow and the wrist. Your upper arms stay covered, and you skip the heat of a full long sleeve. If you want more options in this length, browse our 3/4 sleeve tops.

Fit

A relaxed fit skims over the waist instead of clinging to it. That matters more in a printed top than a solid one, because a print on a snug fabric draws the eye to every curve. The Lexi Top is cut with an easy, relaxed fit. If you are between sizes, the measurement diagram shows how to take your measurements.

Fabric

The Lexi Top is a soft, breathable rayon-spandex blend with comfortable stretch, so it moves with you through a long day of errands, church, and kids.

The Lexi Top in four prints

The Lexi Top is our newest release in this style. Each print below is described the way we describe it on the product page.

Tigerlily

Small dark-brown flowers and leaves on a warm taupe ground. It is a quiet print that goes with most of the neutrals you already own.

Signature

Crisp white with hand-drawn black bows and ribbon streamers. It reads classic and works with dark skirts.

Postmark

Willow

A patchwork grid of white florals against deep cobalt blue. It has the most presence of the four.

How to pair a printed top with a skirt

You do not need a rulebook. A few habits keep a printed top looking put together.

Let one piece have the print

When the top has a print, choose a solid skirt. Two prints compete, and the outfit starts to look busy. Solids are also the easiest way to stretch a printed top across more outfits.

Pull the skirt color from the print

Look at the colors in the top and pick one for the skirt. A top with cobalt blue in it, like Willow, goes well with Navy or Black. A top with red in it, like Postmark, can sit next to Navy or White. A white top with black bows, like Signature, is easy with Black or Navy. For a softer look with Tigerlily, Khaki or Camel sit close to the warm taupe.

Keep the skirt simple

A relaxed top over a smooth, solid skirt keeps the lines clean and the outfit comfortable. Our Relaxed Midi Skirt comes in 25", 27", and 31" lengths and nine colors, including Black, Navy, Khaki, Camel, Brick Red, and White. You can browse more in our midi skirts, stretch waist skirts, and no slit skirts collections.

Match the length to the occasion

A 31" skirt with a printed 3/4 sleeve top is a natural fit for church or the office. A 25" or 27" skirt is easier for everyday running around. Our guide to choosing a modest skirt covers length in more detail.

Sizes and who it fits

The Lexi Top runs S through 3XL at one price, so a plus size customer pays the same as everyone else. It is tagged maternity friendly, and you can find more in our plus size tops and maternity friendly tops collections. If you are building out a fall wardrobe, our guide to modest layering tops shows what to wear underneath, and the new tops collection has what has just arrived.

Frequently asked questions

What skirt goes with a printed top?

A solid skirt in one of the colors from the print. Navy and Black work with the widest range of prints. Our classic skirts and Relaxed Midi Skirts both come in solid colors.

Is the Lexi Top true to size?

It has a relaxed fit, so it is cut with some room. Check the size chart on the product page and compare it to your own measurements. If you are between sizes, the measurement diagram can help you decide.

Does the Lexi Top come in plus sizes?

Yes. It is available in S, M, L, XL, XXL, and XXXL, and the price is the same in every size.

Can I wear a printed top to church?

A 3/4 sleeve top with a relaxed fit, worn with a midi skirt, covers what most women want covered at church. Choose the print that fits your congregation and your own comfort.

Is the Lexi Top maternity friendly?

We have tagged it maternity friendly. Bodies change a lot during pregnancy, so size up if you want more room through the middle.

What is a 3/4 sleeve?

A sleeve that ends between the elbow and the wrist. It covers more than a short sleeve and stays cooler than a full long sleeve.
